Open-ended beats single-purpose
A toy that does one specific thing gets used once. Building sets, creative kits, anything that can be played with a dozen different ways tends to actually last, because a kid's imagination does the rest of the work long after the novelty of unwrapping it wears off.
Ask what they're actually into right now, not what they liked last year
Kids' interests move fast, and “what did they like at Christmas” is often already out of date by their birthday. If a few of you are going in together on something bigger - a proper bike, a big set - a HintDrop group pot means everyone can contribute toward the one thing they actually want this month, not last month's version of them.
